A Breathing Pause: Five Minutes to Calm

A grounding exercise

In my book “Coaching and Supervising through Bereavement”, one of the activities at the back is a grounding exercise. This is useful to use for any emotional issue where someone needs to quieten the whirlwind of their mind and bring them into the present moment. It also enables them to get out of their head and into their body. Ideal for clients who find it difficult to do somatic work in coaching and are perhaps resistant to meditation.

Adapted from the book by Amanda Ridings "Pause For Breath" (2011), this is a simple grounding activity for people who don't do this kind of thing normally but want to just settle a nervous/jittery feeling. It can be done at any time and multiple times in the day.
