How To Tame The Abrasive Employee

Turning your Fierce Lion into a Pussy Cat

FROM FIERCE LION TO PUSSY CAT

HOW TO TAME THE ABRASIVE EMPLOYEE

Do you work with anyone like this?

“It’s like walking on egg shells . She sees something that sets her off then we are tense all day.”

“Coming to work is a doddle when they are not in!”

“He talks down to people quite abruptly. Almost interrogating them. He makes people feel like idiots.”

“He has no patience and doesn’t trust people to do the job properly so you end up playing safe and not using your initiative in case it upsets him.”

Working with abrasive people can make daily work a nightmare for everyone around them especially for their direct reports if they happen to be managers too. Laura Crawshaw in her book on abrasive bosses called the people around abrasive managers the “working wounded” because of the trauma caused for subordinates, peers and even superiors. She defines an abrasive leader as “an individual with managerial authority whose interpersonal behaviour causes emotional distress in co-workers sufficient to disrupt organisational functioning”.

It’s like working alongside a very angry lion who hasn’t had a good meal in days!

So how do you turn your Fierce Lion into a Pussy Cat?

Well a good place to start is with my latest ebook!

I’ve written From Fierce Lion To Pussy Cat: How To Tame The Abrasive Employee to help you unlock the secrets of handling an abrasive individual within the workplace. It highlights the pragmatic tips to avoiding the classic mistakes made by most organisations. And it will help you to really decide what the right thing to do is BEFORE you make some costly mistakes.

This ebook is definitely for you if:

  • You are responsible for the performance of an abrasive employee as their line manager or HR Manager.
  • You work for an abrasive person because he is your line manager.
  • You work alongside an abrasive employee who happens to be a peer of yours.
  • You are a coach and would like to learn more about helping these types of clients.

The key to all of this is to take action sooner rather than later before really serious damage has been done. By tackling an abrasive employee you will then send out the message that their abrasive type of behaviour is not acceptable and lessens the chance of creating a culture that breeds more of these big terrifying cats!
